Hydrotherapy and land physiotherapy: choosing the right approach

Water and land offer different ways to practise movement. The useful question is which environment supports your current goals and how the two can fit together.

What changes in water?

Buoyancy changes how much weight you bear, while moving through water provides resistance. These properties can create an alternative setting for supervised exercise.

Why land work still matters

Many goals involve tasks outside the pool: stairs, walking, lifting or sport. A rehabilitation plan may include land-based practice to connect treatment with those tasks.

Choose after assessment

Medical suitability, confidence in water, access and your functional needs all matter. Ask your therapist to explain why a particular approach is recommended.
